F-Secure Freedome Review 2024: Is It Worth the Price?
F-Secure Freedome Overview
I was eager to find out just how good Freedome VPN was, given that it was developed by an alliance of 4 cybersecurity firms known as F-Secure. The company has received numerous accreditations and certificates for its work in the fields of cloud security, internet security, threat intelligence, and vulnerability management. With this background in mind, I conducted several in-depth tests to determine if it deserves a spot on our list of best VPNs.
Unfortunately, I can’t recommend F-Secure Freedome to everyone despite its few appealing features. It is a great tool if you just want to browse the web without worrying if someone is tracking what you do online. On the other hand, if you desire to unblock streaming media websites, download numerous files, or utilize P2P apps, then you should search elsewhere. Its questionable privacy policy is also a deterrent for privacy-conscious users.
F-Secure Freedome offers a noteworthy feature: a 30-day free trial. Furthermore, if you decide to purchase the VPN following the trial, you can benefit from a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Don’t Have Time? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary
- Limited unblocking capabilities. I could not unblock Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video using F-Secure Freedome. Read more about my streaming experience.
- Consistent speeds. The speeds on nearby servers and distant servers were fast enough for my online activities. View speed test results below.
- Solid security features. F-Secure Freedome comes with 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, and a browser protection tool. The security features are outlined here.
- Concerning logs policy. F-Secure Freedome claims it doesn’t keep logs, but it records your IP address. See my privacy analysis here.
- Compatible with popular OSes. F-Secure Freedome is available for Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS, but does not support manual configuration. Read my full report on Freedome VPN’s compatibility.
- Good range of support available. This includes online chat, phone, email, a help forum, FAQs, and a blog. Read about my attempts to contact support.
- Reasonable pricing. F-Secure Freedome is competitively priced, but offers short-term plans only on mobile plans. See the pricing here.
F-Secure Freedome Unblocks Netflix and BBC iPlayer (But Can’t Access Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+)
As per insights from F-Secure Freedome, the VPN’s core objective lies in furnishing users with anonymous Internet access, rather than emphasizing its unblocking capabilities. My evaluation revealed that Freedome effectively collaborated with Netflix and BBC iPlayer, enabling access to their content. However, it encountered limitations in unblocking other prominent streaming platforms that I tested. Despite this, Freedome demonstrated smooth performance and commendable speeds with the platforms it successfully unblocked during my testing phase.
Netflix and BBC iPlayer: Unblocked
Netflix worked well with F-Secure Freedome. In my test, I was able to access my US Netflix library and watch Father of the Year in HD without any buffering issues. You can also access Netflix through F-Secure Freedome’s VPN servers in the United Kingdom, Spain, Canada, Singapore, Austria, France, Germany, and Japan.
You’ll be happy to know that F-Secure Freedome can unblock BBC iPlayer. In case you have to be away from home for a while but you don’t want to miss any of your favorite television programs, F-Secure Freedome will allow you to use BBC iPlayer seamlessly.
The fast speed of the service made streaming HD videos a breeze, with barely any buffering. So connect to the UK server and binge away.
Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+: Blocked
Freedome VPN was flagged by Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+ every single time, and I was not permitted to stream content from these platforms.
At first, it seemed like Hulu might work. But when I tried to log in, I was met with a never-ending loading screen. I also tried Disney+, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video, but none of them worked with the provider. As soon as the platforms detected that I was connected through a VPN, they blocked my access and displayed an error similar to the one indicated below.
Although Freedome offers great speed, its geo-spoofing capabilities are currently quite limited. By far, ExpressVPN is the most reliable VPN for streaming. It’s lightning fast, and it lets you watch shows and movies from around the world on services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+.
Speed
- 7.0 / 10Decent Speeds on Short and Long Distances
Freedome’s network was reliable and fast for most online activities and delivered consistent speeds in a wide range of locations worldwide. Despite being able to connect reliably to a server within my own country, I was most impressed that I could connect with decent speeds to countries farther away like Australia and Singapore.
Speed Test Results
When I was connected to Freedome, my average connection speed was 22.39Mbps, which was 45% slower than my normal internet speed. To establish a baseline, I tested the speeds of my local Internet connection in the US without using a VPN. The speed test I performed resulted in downloads of 41.04Mbps and uploads of 21.67Mbps.
After that, I connected to a Freedome server in Los Angeles. Specifically, I wanted to see what effect the short distance would have on my connection speed. There was only a minimal 36% drop in my connection speed from my baseline.
Following that, I connected to the Australian server since it was furthest from my home location. The speed didn’t seem to drop more than my local connections, which surprised me. I got download speeds of 25.78Mbps.
Similarly, I experienced higher than average speeds while connected to a French server. My traffic dropped by 67% when I routed through the UK, but I was still able to stream videos. The Freedome Internet service is fast enough to allow you to stream video and play online games without worrying about bandwidth or high latency, though the initial connection can be a bit slow as it took a few seconds to establish each connection to a server.
Even though Freedome VPN only offered a limited number of servers, it performed admirably in my tests. You can improve speeds by switching from OpenVPN to IKEv2, which, in my testing, yielded a speed increase of about 10%.
Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds
Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.
Servers
- 5.0 / 10Server Network — Few Server Locations in 24 Countries
Freedome VPN has a relatively small network of servers. Since the provider doesn’t make its total server count public, I had to rely on the application’s count of available servers when making my decision. F-Secure Freedome has only 29 servers in total, which is a disappointingly low number considering the high price.
The locations are organized by continent, covering the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, but you have access to other helpful information like server load, latency, and stability. Only 24 countries are represented. There are 5 servers available in the United States, 3 in Canada, and one in every other country. There are no Freedome servers in Africa, Central America, or South America, limiting the service’s reach.
According to F-Secure’s FAQ section on its website, the company uses virtual servers as part of its server infrastructure. As a result, it may appear as though some servers are located in a different country than they actually are. While using a virtual location may slow down the service and reduce its dependability, everything seems to be running smoothly so far. It remains to be seen whether or not it will become an issue if the number of users gets larger.
The 24-location server network of Freedome is definitely not what you would anticipate from a service that charges a premium price. Because of this, you may find better results with a service like CyberGhost, which has more than 11,670 servers to choose from.
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at WizCase, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as CyberGhost VPN. However, this does not affect our review process, as we adhere to a strict testing methodology.
Security — Highly Secure with AES-256 Encryption
Several of the security measures implemented by F-Secure Freedome demonstrate that it values its customers’ safety and privacy. Freedome employs the most sophisticated encryption technology and the most secure VPN protocols.
The provider uses the Diffie-Hellman key exchange to offer perfect forward secrecy. This setup creates a new encryption key every time a new session is initiated. A hacker who gains access to one of your sessions and records your traffic will no longer have access to that data once you end the session.
A summary of F-Secure Freedome’s security options follows.
- Rigid security – 256-bit encryption with RSA keys up to 2048 bits is used for security on Windows, macOS, and Android devices. The provider supports 256-bit encryption, 2048-bit keys, and SHA-256 authentication for iOS devices.
- Multiple protocol options – Freedome can be used with different protocols based on the operating system you’re using. IPSec/IKEv2 and OpenVPN are supported on Windows and Mac. On Android, OpenVPN UDP is the only protocol supported. On iOS, IPSec is supported along with IKEv1 and IKEv2.
- Split tunneling – Freedome VPN’s split tunneling feature is restricted to the Windows and Android operating systems. This function, dubbed “Apps bypassing VPN,” lets you choose which applications’ data transmissions should bypass the VPN tunnel.
- Kill switch – This feature will disconnect your internet connection if your VPN connection drops, preventing your browsing data from being exposed. Additionally, the kill switch makes sure that you do not suffer from IP and DNS leaks, which can reveal your location and DNS queries.
As a company that cares about security in general, F-Secure Freedom has added some new features to its VPN. These features, however, require logging additional information, as explained in the provider’s privacy policy. You can expect to see the following:
- Browsing Protection – This feature guards you against potentially harmful websites and keeps you safe online. However, this VPN clearly monitors your online activity by revealing how many potentially dangerous sites it has blocked during your browsing sessions.
- Tracking Protection – You’ve probably heard that trackers are used by advertisers all over the web to better target their messages to specific users. This feature will show you the total number of thwarted tracking attempts.
- Tracker Mapper – This tool plots your online footprints on a map, revealing which sites are responsible for tracking your movements and from which locations. It’s a great addition, but just like F-Secure Freedome VPN, it’s not entirely secure, despite the fact that the company uses it to promote online security.
Following extensive testing, I can guarantee that using F-Secure Freedome VPN will prevent the leakage of your IP, DNS, WebRTC, or Flash IP address. Some of my results differed from one another with respect to the location of the server, but I attribute this discrepancy to the use of virtual servers rather than physical ones. It is not a significant concern.
Privacy — Ambiguous and Lacking Transparency
As reassuring as it is that no logs of data usage are kept, F-Secure Freedome does keep connection logs. When you first connect to a VPN, the service provider logs information about your IP address and device. Even if no logs are kept after a session ends, it could theoretically allow for continuous monitoring of your activity while connected to its servers.
The company also keeps logs of your VPN connection time, data transferred per session, your public IP address, your computer’s host name, and packet inspection results that indicate service abuse (P2P use on non-P2P servers). There is a 90-day retention policy for these connection logs.
Freedome’s logging philosophy is also mirrored in the app’s “Tracker Mapper” function. If you enable this function, you’ll be able to keep track of the trackers you come across in your web browsing over the course of a day, as well as the sites they appear on and the data they collect. Although this data will be removed after three days, it demonstrates how easily Freedome VPN can track your online actions.
While I recognize that the vast majority of consumers will not be adversely affected by this level of data collection, I still find it to be somewhat intrusive. F-Secure claims it will comply with valid legal requests for customer data and will not hesitate to disclose information to the government in response to a court order or warrant. To ensure a truly private VPN connection, I recommend only using a reputable company that does not keep any activity logs.
Freedome VPN, fortunately, is headquartered in Finland. The country has some of the world’s strictest privacy laws, making it an ideal location for VPN service providers to set up shop. Therefore, the provider is under no obligation to reveal any information. Despite its convenient location, I wouldn’t recommend using Freedome VPN because of the service’s intrusive logging policies.
ExpressVPN is the best option if anonymity is a top priority for you. Its policy prohibits it from keeping records of its users’ online activities. To top it all off, ExpressVPN has its legal base in the British Virgin Islands, a country with lax privacy protections and no data retention regulations.
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at WizCase, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as ExpressVPN. However, this does not affect our review process, as we adhere to a strict testing methodology.
Torrenting — Not P2P-Friendly
While the company aims to protect its customers’ privacy and security, it does not support anything illegal. The service blocks BitTorrent programs to prevent them from being used for illegal downloading, which is often the case.
So, Freedome VPN does not support P2P sharing, and you will not be able to download files in this way, regardless of whether they are legal public domain files or illegal copies of copyrighted materials.
In contrast, ExpressVPN is completely P2P compatible and designed to work with BitTorrent, uTorrent, and qBittorrent. It’s one of the rare VPNs that allows port forwarding, so you can maximize your torrenting experience. You can try ExpressVPN’s torrenting services without risk thanks to the company’s 30-day money-back guarantee.
My team and I do not condone illegal torrenting, so I recommend that you familiarize yourself with your country’s laws and regulations before engaging in any P2P file-sharing activities.
Does F-Secure Freedome Work in China? No!
You should avoid Freedome VPN if you need a VPN to access content in China. It was confirmed to me by a company representative that the Chinese government has blocked access to all of Freedome VPN’s servers. In addition, its relatively small server network might not have much of an effect on performance in locations with significant levels of online censorship.
You should check out ExpressVPN if you’re traveling to China because it is one of the few VPNs that work there. When using a VPN in China, remember that you are still subject to local laws and regulations and should exercise basic caution.

User Experience
- 6.0 / 10Simultaneous Device Connections — Supports up to 7 devices
A single F-Secure Freedome subscription can be used across a maximum of 7 connected devices. Prices vary according to the number of devices you intend to protect and the length of your subscription. Prices increase proportionally with the number of devices you wish to secure.
Unfortunately, this functionality is limited to the Mac and Windows platforms. If you have an Android or iOS subscription, only one person can use it at a time. You should consider Cyberghost since it allows 7 simultaneous connections across all devices and operating systems.
Device Compatibility — All Major Platforms Supported
F-Secure Freedome doesn’t claim a wide range of supported platforms, but users who only want to protect their computers, tablets, and phones would probably be more than satisfied with its native apps. It is available as a standalone application for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
F-Secure Freedome does not support new-generation gaming consoles, streaming devices, or smart TVs. Additionally, the software cannot be manually configured to function on any other platforms, including Linux and routers.
Ease of Setup & Installation — Suitable for Newbies and Pros
F-Secure Freedome offers an incredibly user-friendly interface. The desktop and mobile apps are both designed to be aesthetically pleasing. With quick download links for both desktop and mobile devices, you can get started in less than 5 minutes.
Once the setup is finished, you can either run the trial version of the app or activate your subscription (if you have one). The main window of this app is rather sizable, and it contains a number of visually-appealing buttons and animations that will likely slow down the experience on older or less powerful devices.
Compared to other VPN software, the Freedome Windows client stands out visually. When you first open the app, you’ll notice a sizable connection button. Click it, and the VPN will automatically connect you to a server. Additionally, the interface shows the total data transferred, the number of potentially harmful websites blocked, and tracking attempts blocked.
When you click the server button, a full list of servers appears, sorted into tabs for Automatic Location, Recently Used, Europe, Asia, North America, and Oceania. While you can’t bookmark specific servers, I did find a useful function that shows your most recently visited servers on the server list page.
With the extensive menu along the left-hand side, which most VPN services choose to hide behind just a single button, the client appears rather busy. On this menu are links to settings, your subscription details, and customer support. You will also find options for tracking protection, browsing protection, and tracker mapping.
Steps to Installing F-Secure Freedome on Windows:
- Download the Windows setup file. Proceed to the VPN section of the website and download the Windows setup file. You don’t have to sign up for an account to take advantage of the trial period.
- Run the installation file. Initiate the F-Secure Freedome VPN installation by double-clicking the.exe file you downloaded. Proceed with the installation by carefully following the instructions that appear on the screen.
- Launch the application and log in. You don’t need to log in if you choose the free trial, but you must do so if you have an active subscription.
- Establish connection. The software’s connection interface must now be accessible to you. To connect to a server, use the client’s “PROTECTION ON/OFF” toggle.
Support
- 7.0 / 10F-Secure provides comprehensive customer support through an online articles database, forums, live chat support, and telephone support. It can be accessed either by clicking on ‘Support’ on the F-Secure website or by navigating to ‘Help’ within the Freedome VPN client.
Live chat allows you to submit a question directly from your browser, which is then reviewed by an employee from F-Secure. I submitted my question and received a detailed response in minutes. My follow-up question was answered promptly as well. I was also impressed with the friendliness of the employee. Alternatively, F-Secure recommends that you consult their forums and FAQs if chat isn’t available.
A key feature of this site is that customers can find customer support phone numbers for a wide range of countries, which is quite unusual these days. The company also has an active social media presence. The provider can be contacted via Twitter if you wish, although I recommend using one of the other options if the problem is urgent.
How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care
We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
Pricing
- 5.0 / 10Taking into account the fast speeds, rock-solid encryption, and comprehensive suite of security options, F-Secure Freedome’s price is surprisingly reasonable. With the exception of mobile plans, all subscriptions require a full year’s commitment.
The primary distinction between these plans is the number of devices that can be protected simultaneously. An annual subscription is available for the protection of three or seven devices simultaneously. There’s also a two-year subscription that provides coverage for seven devices.
There are a variety of payment options for the VPN service offered by the provider. Payments can be made with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, PayPal, iDEAL, or Apple Pay. Bank transfers, checks, and money orders are also acceptable methods of payment. The lack of cryptocurrency as a payment option is notable. This can be a problem for customers who want the anonymity that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies provide.
It is imperative that top VPN providers offer users the option to test the service prior to asking them to commit to a long-term plan. Freedome offers this opportunity with a free trial that lasts for 30 days. Simply install the F-Secure Freedome VPN app on your device to begin your risk-free trial. The app will issue you a random ID, and you won’t need to sign up for anything.
The company also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means that even after making the purchase, you have the option to request a complete refund if you decide that the product did not meet your expectations.
F-Secure Freedome offers the following plans
Final Verdict
With advanced encryption, robust VPN protocols, and DNS leak protection, F-Secure Freedome VPN ensures the safety of its users despite its seemingly limited server network. Moreover, the speed results were positive, and the service provided fast speeds in most of the areas I tested.
While F-Secure Freedome claims that it does not log your online activity, the company actually monitors extensive amounts of data in order to prevent illegal activity. Other drawbacks include the service’s inability to unblock the vast majority of streaming websites and the fact that torrenting is generally forbidden. The lack of monthly and quarterly subscription options may also discourage potential customers.
ExpressVPN is the best VPN available, and it doesn’t require you to commit to a yearly plan or compromise your online privacy in order to use it. It is also ideally suited to fast HD streaming and private torrenting. You can test ExpressVPN out for yourself and if you’re not satisfied, you have up to 30 days to claim a refund.
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at WizCase, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as ExpressVPN. However, this does not affect our review process, as we adhere to a strict testing methodology.
FAQs About F-Secure Freedome
Is F-Secure Freedome good?
Can I use F-Secure Freedome for free?
Yes! It’s interesting that I was given a 30-day free trial instead of the 5-day trial that was advertised on the provider’s website. On top of that, the provider offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on all its plans.
Free VPN services typically have lower speeds, fewer server locations, and less secure connections than their paid counterparts. Here are a few solid options for free VPN services that I’d recommend trying if you’re on a tight budget.
Is F-Secure Freedome really safe?
Yes, Freedome employs strong encryption and protocol that will help keep your data secure. The company sets itself apart with a unique malware and protection package and a corporate board that has several years of experience in high-end security.
Also, F-Secure has included extras like anti-tracking and browser-based protection from malicious websites within the VPN itself. These features can be accessed through the client software. The service, however, is not very private since F-Secure requests a lot of information about your internet activity to offer these functions.
Editor's Note: We value our relationship with our readers, and we strive to earn your trust through transparency and integrity. We are in the same ownership group as some of the industry-leading products reviewed on this site: ExpressVPN, Cyberghost, Private Internet Access, and Intego.
