Cargo VPN Review 2024: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?

Cargo VPN Overview

Cargo VPN markets itself as the best VPN for Mac users. Many VPNs make such claims, but few live up to the expectations. I wanted to see if Cargo VPN’s exclusivity to Mac and iOS devices would make it stand out among premium VPNs. So, I put it through thorough testing.

After several tests, I found that Cargo VPN’s features are basic. The VPN has an impressive server network, fast speeds, and top-notch security. However, it fails to unblock popular streaming platforms, it took up to a week for support to respond to my questions, and has a privacy policy worth being concerned about.

Cargo VPN offers a 24-hour free trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee. With this, you can try the VPN and check out the features for yourself. If you’re not satisfied with the service, you can opt for a refund and check these best VPNs for Mac and other popular devices.

Don’t Have Time? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary

Cargo VPN Unblocks Netflix and BBC iPlayer (But Can’t Access Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video)

Cargo VPN performed poorly when I tested it for unblocking streaming platforms. I was disappointed that the service could only access Netflix and BBC iPlayer. It failed to unblock popular streaming services like Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. I did, however, get to stream in HD with the services that worked.

Netflix and BBC iPlayer: Unblocked

Cargo VPN only unblocked a couple of streaming services during my tests. It successfully unblocked my US Netflix account, allowing me to stream my favorite shows in HD. After connecting to the New York server, it took only a few seconds to load the stream.

Cargo VPN provided me with fast speeds that allowed me to stream in HD

My colleague in the UK also unblocked her BBC iPlayer account seamlessly with Cargo VPN. She watched Doctor Who and other favorite shows without lags.

My colleague was able to watch Doctor Who without lags using Cargo VPN’s fast servers

Cargo VPN’s servers provided a smooth streaming experience. I didn’t experience any buffering for any movie or show I streamed.

Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video: Blocked

It was quite disappointing that Cargo VPN couldn’t unblock popular streaming sites. During my tests, I connected to different US servers. Unfortunately, none could unblock Hulu, HBO, Disney+, and Prime Video. The services detected that I was connecting with a VPN and blocked me, showing me a similar error message for each platform.

Your device is connected to the internet using a VPN or proxy service.

Cargo VPN’s poor unblocking abilities leave little to be desired if you frequently stream on your Mac or iOS devices. You’ll need a reliable VPN that unblocks popular streaming platforms where Cargo VPN fails. For instance, VPNs like Cyberghost have specialized streaming servers that seamlessly unblock popular streaming platforms like Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, and HBO Max.

Speed

- 7.0 / 10

Cargo VPN Provides Fast Speeds Across Its Servers

Cargo VPN does an excellent job when it comes to speed. Servers close to my location maintained blazing-fast speeds. I also got relatively fast speeds (with only a slight reduction) with servers far away from my location. The fast speeds allowed me to stream videos and play games lag-free.

Speed Test Results

I began testing with a base internet download speed of 22.3Mbps. After connecting to Cargo VPN, I got an average download speed of about 19.39Mbps — a 13% drop in speed. I got varying speeds depending on the closeness of the servers to my location. Nearby servers in the US, UK, and Canada saw download speeds of about 21.4Mbps, 23.33Mbps, and 19.49Mbps, respectively, which was quite impressive. The farthest server from my location (the server in Japan) produced 13.35Mbps — a 40% drop in speed, which was good for a distant server.

Screenshot of Cargo VPN speeds in 4 server locations

I was pleased that Cargo VPN provided me with fast speeds

Similarly, the upload speeds were also fast across the servers. I got 22.61Mbps on the US server, 19.27Mbps with the UK server, and 28.32Mbps with the server in Japan. These speeds are more than sufficient for activities like gaming that require an average of 3-4Mbps upload speeds.

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

Servers

- 7.0 / 10

Server Network — Impressive Network

Cargo VPN has an impressive network of 1000+ servers in 70+ locations. It offers VPN servers across 5 continents, including North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. You’ll find servers in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Finland, Greece, Estonia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Iceland, Brazil, India, Hong Kong, and the UAE.

Screenshot of Cargo VPN server list on the iOS app

Cargo VPN doesn’t have a server list page on its website

Cargo VPN doesn’t own the servers in its network. It rents servers from another VPN service provider — KeepSolid VPN. This explains why KeepSolid VPN handles its troubleshooting issues when you reach out to Cargo VPN’s support.

There are specialized servers for streaming and P2P. You’ll also find an “Optimal” server button that connects you to the fastest server close to you. Each server displays the workload on the server in percentages. So, you get to see which server is overcrowded and which one isn’t in real-time. This should be helpful if you need to carry out an activity that requires fast speeds.

Security — Multiple Security Protocols

Cargo VPN provides military-grade protection. It uses AES-256 encryption to keep you safe from hackers, snoopers, and other cybersecurity threats.

Cargo VPN offers multiple security protocols. You can choose between OpenVPN, IPSec, KeepSolid Wise UDP/TCP protocols. Each of these protocols has different security and performance capabilities, and you can select the one that best serves you.

Switching security protocol on The Cargo VPN app

I was surprised to see that Cargo VPN supports the OpenVPN protocol

I was impressed seeing how Cargo VPN maintained fast speeds across its servers despite the solid security features it offers. The VPN also provides a DNS firewall. So, I didn’t get any DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leaks.

I was happy that my real IP address wasn’t exposed when I connected with Cargo VPN servers

Despite these solid security features, it was disappointing finding out that Cargo VPN lacks a kill-switch. A kill switch will help to prevent data leaks if you have an unsteady connection. This way, your internet connection is cut off to protect your identity.

Privacy — Questionable Privacy Policy

Cargo VPN partially logs users’ data. The VPN doesn’t log the websites you visit or the files you access but it keeps a log of the bandwidth transferred, connection dates, and the number of devices you connect.

Cargo VPN rents the servers of another VPN service — KeepSolid VPN. This made me wonder if KeepSolid VPN’s privacy policy also applies to Cargo VPN users.

Cargo VPN is a product of Eltima Software IBC, a company registered in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE has a personal data protection law that requires your consent for data requests involving your information. Despite this law, Eltima states in its privacy policy that it could share your data with third parties without your consent if there’s a legal request for your information.

Screenshot of Eltima privacy policy

I was shocked to find out that Cargo VPN could share personally identifiable information with third parties

Given that Cargo VPN could log your data and share it with third parties, including government structures, I wouldn’t recommend it for privacy. If you’re a privacy-minded individual like me, you would probably want to opt for another VPN with a stronger privacy policy. ExpressVPN has a strict no-logs policy and independent audits to back up its claims.

Torrenting — Supports P2P and Torrenting

Cargo VPN supports torrenting on a few servers. These servers are labeled ‘torrents’ and come with slower speeds than regular servers. Surprisingly, some of the servers that allow P2P are located in places with strong anti-piracy laws like Canada and France.

With a privacy policy that could see your data logged in countries where Cargo VPN’s servers are located and your data turned over to the government, I don’t see Cargo VPN as a safe VPN for torrenting.

Keep in mind that using a VPN doesn’t give you the right to commit illegal activities, and downloading copyrighted files is illegal. Make sure to check with the regulations of your country before torrenting.

Does Cargo VPN work in China? Not Likely!

CargoVPN is not likely to work in China. Since I’m not physically located in China, I couldn’t test it myself. I contacted customer support to find out if the VPN works in China, but I didn’t get an affirmative answer.

Screenshot of Cargo VPN's feedback about China

Cargo VPN didn’t clearly state if its VPN works in China

China’s “Great Firewall” actively blocks VPN providers so that the services won’t work there. Cargo VPN lacks the obfuscation technology used by top-grade VPNs to bypass the country’s strong firewalls. So, it most likely won’t work there.

If you’re visiting China for business or vacation, you’ll need a reliable VPN. My go-to VPN when traveling to China is ExpressVPN. I recommend using ExpressVPN to browse the free web whenever you visit China. Keep in mind that using a non-government-approved VPN is illegal in China. However, there haven’t been any cases of tourists being penalized for using a VPN.

User Experience

- 6.0 / 10

Simultaneous Device Connections — Connects Up to 5 Devices

Cargo VPN supports up to 5 device connections. I connected my Macbook, iPhone, and iPad devices. It didn’t affect my speeds as I streamed and surfed the web.

While 5 device connections may be enough for many users, I would probably prefer a VPN that is compatible with more than just my apple devices. If you want to connect a VPN to all your devices then I recommend using IPVanish as it allows for unlimited device connections on all popular devices with just one subscription.

Device Compatibility — Only Available for macOS and iOS

Cargo VPN limits its service to only Mac and iOS devices. You can only use the service on your Macbook, iPad, and iPhone. Top-grade VPNs usually have VPN apps for Windows, but Cargo VPN lacks support for popular devices including Windows, Android, and Linux. It was also disappointing to find out that the VPN doesn’t work with routers or Amazon FireTV.

Ease of Setup & Installation — Very Simple to Install

Cargo VPN provides a straightforward installation process. The VPN’s website provides links to the app on the Eltima Website or the Apple App Store. It takes less than 3 minutes to install the app. You get a 24-hour free trial once you sign in to the app after which you can connect with the servers and navigate through the app.

How to Download and Setup Cargo VPN on Mac

  1. Download the Cargo VPN app from the Mac App Store or the Eltima Website.

  2. Install the app and launch it.
  3. Sign up for the service on the app with a Google account, Facebook, or Apple ID.
  4. Once you’re logged in, navigate to “Servers” and connect with a server from the list.
Screenshot of the Cargo VPN Mac app interface
  5. Start browsing the web securely.

Cargo VPN has a friendly user interface. Navigating through the app is intuitive and straightforward. You’ll find a few menus with checkboxes or lists that you can scroll through. You can connect to a server with a click and switch between servers without disconnecting from the one you’re connected to first.

Support

- 1.0 / 10

Cargo VPN has the worst customer support in my experience. You can only reach out to the VPN through email for troubleshooting issues. There’s phone support, but it’s only available for sales-related issues. With the absence of live chat support, you will find it difficult to get urgent assistance. I was surprised to learn that you only get urgent assistance if you opt-in for something called a premium support plan which allows you to get support within 4 hours during European business hours.

Screenshot of Eltima's contact page

I was surprised to learn that you only get urgent assistance if you opt-in for a premium support plan

Cargo VPN claims to respond to inquiries within 1-2 business days, but it took up to a week for me to get feedback. I got feedback from Eltima support for one ticket and KeepSolid VPN support for another, which goes to show that Cargo VPN uses another VPN’s support infrastructure. Cargo VPN has an FAQ page that is difficult to find and only contains a few questions and responses. You’ll also find a forum, but it only caters to other Eltima products. No posts about Cargo VPN are found there.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.

Pricing

- 6.0 / 10

Cargo VPN has decent pricing for the features it provides. It offers 3 premium VPN plans: Standard (1-month), Economy (1-year), and Optimal (3-year) plans. If you commit to the long-term plan, you get to pay less. There’s also the option to pay for a personal static IP or a personal VPN server (which offers additional security) for an added cost.

You can conveniently make payment using your credit card through iTunes. However, if you prioritize privacy and prefer crypto payments, you might feel let down.

Cargo VPN offers a 24-hour free trial for you to test the service before committing to the premium plan. 24 hours may not be enough to examine the service critically. So, you may have to pay for the service to get an extended time to test the VPN thoroughly.

There’s a 14-day money-back guarantee, but Eltima’s refund policy has clauses that make claiming a refund difficult. It doesn’t offer a refund if the software fails to meet your needs. It only offers a refund if it doesn’t function according to the listed features on its homepage. Even then, customer support will have to troubleshoot your issues first. This could get frustrating since it takes up to a week at times to get feedback from customer support.

Final Verdict

Cargo VPN is a decent VPN that performs averagely. It offers impressive speeds, an extensive server network, and intuitive apps available only for macOS and iOS users.

The VPN fails when it comes to unblocking most popular streaming platforms, providing fast and responsive support, and having a genuine no-logs privacy policy. If you need a VPN with top-grade features, 24/7 live chat support, and a solid privacy policy I recommend you check out ExpressVPN.

FAQs About Cargo VPN

Is Cargo VPN good?

No. Cargo VPN offers good features such as fast speeds, military-grade security, and an extensive server network. However, its privacy policy, poor streaming abilities, and slow customer support don’t allow this VPN to compete with the top VPNs on the market.

Can I use Cargo VPN for free?

Yes! Cargo VPN offers a 24-hour free trial for you to test its service. There’s also a 14-day money-back guarantee to claim a refund if you opt-in for a premium plan. But Cargo VPN makes claiming a refund very difficult.

Cargo VPN’s short trial period may not be enough for you to test the service fully. With its stringent refund policy, you may want to consider a VPN a more flexible refund system. I recommend you check out these reliable free VPNs.

Is Cargo VPN really safe?

Not really. Although Cargo VPN offers solid security features that protect you from hackers and other cybersecurity threats, its questionable privacy policy may expose you to the government’s prying eyes.
