On Monday evening, the official OpenAI account on X was hacked, allowing scammers to promote a fake cryptocurrency, as first reported by The Verge.
This incident is similar to previous scams that targeted OpenAI leaders in recent months, raising concerns about security for major tech companies, as noted by TechCrunch.
Late Monday afternoon, the OpenAI Newsroom account, which shares updates about the company, posted about a new OpenAI-branded blockchain token called “$OPENAI.”
The now-deleted tweet, sent at 6:24 PM ET, claimed, “We’re very happy to announce $OPENAI: the token bridging the gap between AI and blockchain technology.”
It falsely said that all OpenAI users could claim a piece of the initial supply and that holding $OPENAI would give access to future beta programs.
The tweet included a link to a fake OpenAI website, which was not affiliated with the company. When users clicked the link, they were taken to a page that asked them to connect their digital wallets to claim the token, a common trick used by scammers.
So far, neither OpenAI nor X has responded to requests for comment about the hacking. This incident shows how even well-known tech companies can fall victim to cyber threats, highlighting the need for better security to protect users and corporate information.
As scams in the cryptocurrency world become more common, it’s important for users to stay alert and cautious.
