DotVPN Review 2024: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?

DotVPN Overview

DotVPN is one of many VPNs that advertise ultra-fast connections, powerful encryption, robust bandwidth, and native DNS servers. While many VPNs make these promises, few are able to deliver on them fully. To find out if DotVPN could live up to the top VPNs on the market, I put it through rigorous testing.

After sufficient testing, I found that DotVPN was able to deliver in some areas while missing the mark in others. I was impressed with its connection speeds, user-friendly apps on Android and iOS, and encryption standard. Unfortunately, my experience streaming with DotVPN was poor, its privacy policy wasn’t quite air-tight, and it lacks native apps for Windows and macOS.

For those looking to try this service out personally, it does offer a fair money-back guarantee for 45 days, which is quite generous compared to many other VPNs.

Don’t Have Time? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary

DotVPN Unblocks Netflix and HBO Max (But Can’t Access Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer)

During my tests, I found that DotVPN couldn’t unblock most streaming platforms that I tested. I was only able to use it to access Netflix and HBO Max. This VPN isn’t quite geared toward unblocking content, but I still would have liked to see better performance in this category. Many top VPNs can access catalogs like US Netflix while delivering features beyond what DotVPN can offer.

Netflix and HBO Max: Unblocked

I was able to unblock my US Netflix account on my first attempt with the New York US server. Just as I would without a VPN, I streamed in HD and did not experience noticeable lags.

It was easy to access my Netflix library and watch Red Notice

It was also easy to access my HBO Max library. I streamed in perfect quality but still experienced intermittent buffering. This was disappointing, especially since my speeds seemed stable with DotVPN, but this happened regardless of my server choice.

I streamed the show King Richard on HBO Max but experienced buffering

Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer: Blocked

DotVPN wasn’t able to secure access to every streaming service that I tested. When I tried to access my Disney+ account with the DotVPN US server, it wasn’t able to bring me to the Disney+ homepage.

Hulu simply wouldn’t let me log in as it was able to detect that I was using a VPN. The error message requested that I disengage from the proxy service if I wanted to access my account.

Error: Hulu cannot be used with an anonymous proxy service

Amazon Prime Video detected that I was routed to a VPN connection and wouldn’t let me connect to my account.

Some titles might be unavailable in your current location

My colleagues in the UK encountered a similar experience as they were not able to access most streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer which are popular in the UK.

Also, DotVPN cannot unblock UK streaming services and websites, such as BBC iPlayer and ITV, so it is ineffective for those wishing to access UK channels abroad. CyberGhost is my top VPN choice for streaming video because it offers incredible speed and reliability. Performance tests showed that it passed and did a good job of unlocking Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer.

Speed

- 7.0 / 10

Decent Enough to Handle Most Tasks

I was impressed with the speeds on DotVPN’s premium servers. As with most VPNs, you’ll want to connect to a local server to enjoy the most favorable speeds. I found the connection speeds to be decent enough to let me stream, facetime, and do most tasks comfortably.

Speed Test Results

Before turning on DotVPN, the benchmark test showed 35.17 Mbps download speed, 21.0 Mbps upload speed, and 31ms ping time. I was able to achieve some impressive results after enabling DotVPN.

In the absence of quick-connect functionality, I had to manually initiate connections with servers in the United States, England, France, and Italy. The speed test results obtained when connecting to a server in New York show 22.38 Mbps for downloads, a decrease of 27% from my benchmark speed.

Screenshot of speed test results while using DotVPN

The servers closest to my location gave me the best speeds

The France server performed slightly better than the US server in download speeds and even improved my base upload speed. For this test, I measured 26.92 Mbps for downloads and 18.44 Mbps for uploads. As you can see, these results are not too different from those obtained without the use of a VPN.

Even servers further from my location held up fairly well. The UK and Italy servers only reduced my speed by 32% and 33%, respectively. Even with its limited server network, DotVPN offers good speeds – especially when you connect to a server nearby. Streaming, downloading, and browsing on distant servers was mostly fast and free of delay or interruption.

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

Servers

- 5.0 / 10

Server Network — 28 Countries on Browser Extensions and 12 Countries on Android and iOS App

DotVPN has quite an extensive server base when you use its browser extensions. If you don’t install the extensions firsthand, you might be misled to believe it offers servers in only 12 countries. This is because their website is outdated and still showcases content last updated in 2017.

I was impressed with the geographical spread of DotVPN’s proxy servers. It offers servers in Europe, North America, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. Europe has the largest server base. The Americas only consists of servers in the US and Canada while Asia has servers in India, Turkey, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan. You will not find all these servers in the Android or iOS apps as those options contain only 12 countries.

DotVPN doesn’t have many servers, but they are well distributed

I was also happy to discover that DotVPN owns its servers which make for one less security concern. This means that your information is shared with fewer — ideally 0 — parties. A vast server network and an extensive number of server locations make CyberGhost VPN your best bet for finding a nearby server no matter where you are.

Security — Robust Layers of Encryptions

Considering DotVPN’s main selling point is that it keeps you anonymous and secure online, it’s only natural that it offers strong security features.

  • Robust Encryption – Several layers are administered by this service to achieve premium security, including the concrete AES-128 encryption level, which DotVPN attests to be less vulnerable than AES-256. Though this claim is rather questionable, as AES-256 encryption is trusted and used by government agencies, banks, and the vast majority of top VPNs.
  • Strong Protocols – The browser extensions convey your data through the Secure Socket Layer (SSL-proxy) which is stabilized with a 4096-bit kit. For Android and iOS devices, OpenVPN(TCP/UDP) and IPsec are employed respectively as DotVPN’s native protocols.
  • Firewall – This feature protects a VPN connection from being intercepted or abused by unauthorized or malicious users.
  • Ad and Malware Blocking – This feature helps you stay protected against malware and prevents you from seeing annoying advertisements. Activating requires a little digging, as it can be found under the Settings section.

Screenshot of IP/DNS leak tests

DotVPN won’t leak your ISP at all

In addition, I tested the VPN for leaks, which is of particular importance when torrenting. The presence of leaks may impede the full protection of your anonymity, leaving you vulnerable to torrent site dangers. Fortunately, the results were positive. After establishing the connection, I performed IP and DNS leak tests and found no leak of my true IP address.

Privacy — Some Personal Data Collected

Despite its claims of a strict no-logs policy, DotVPN doesn’t entirely keep a clean slate in this area. For instance, it stores basic user information, IP addresses, and emails temporarily encrypted in SHA256 during registrations. Payment details are only in the hands of the third-party processors you might have used while signing up.

It is apparent that they retain some amount of personal information about you. All of it has nothing to do with what you access or download, but you must decide how much information is too much for you.

Screenshot of DotVPN privacy policy

DotVPN states a strict privacy policy on its website

DotVPN is a subsidiary of Smart Security Limited, a Hong Kong-based company. Thus, they are out of the jurisdiction of the Five, Nine, and Fourteen Eyes. The company’s privacy policy states that your details are stored on servers in Hong Kong and that only authorized staff can access them. I wasn’t entirely pleased with the knowledge that they could share your details if new owners acquired its service. Also, DotVPN promises to only safeguard your details in instances when the government would not demand it.

Torrenting — Does Not Officially Support Torrenting

DotVPN says it does not offer peer-to-peer file sharing support. According to the details on their website, the service is set to add this option soon. However, I did make attempts to torrent using the Utorrent platform and I was amazed that I could download torrent files with it.

This experience brought me to the conclusion that their website is outdated as it was last updated in 2017. Given that this VPN doesn’t formally support torrenting, it is worth noting that there is a chance that this activity could be logged or reported.

My team and I do not support copyright infringement by sharing P2P files illegally. We advise that you check with local laws in your location about torrenting and file sharing and only download files freely available in the public domain.

Does DotVPN Work in China? No!

I couldn’t test out this VPN in China myself since I do not live there but customer support told me that DotVPN will not work in China.

Screenshot of chat with customer support about VPN functionality in China

It would be impossible to use DotVPN in China

Despite some of its impressive features, DotVPN lacks the sophistication to break through government-established internet firewalls in China, which explains why it does not advertise its services as an advanced unblocking VPN.

I recommend ExpressVPN if you’re after consistent service no matter where you are, since it uses advanced obfuscation across its 3,000+ servers.

User Experience

- 5.0 / 10

Simultaneous Device Connections — Up to 5 Devices

DotVPN supports connections with up to 5 devices simultaneously. This makes it convenient for people who operate with more than just one device. You should note that signing in to several DotVPN browser extensions does not count as “device connections” unless these extensions are installed on other devices.

If you would rather opt for a VPN that is designed to connect you to more than 5 devices then I suggest that you give Cyberghost a try as it allows for 7 connections without sacrificing speeds or requiring you to use browser extensions.

Device Compatibility — Few Native Apps

DotVPN is quite a simple VPN and its services can be utilized on multiple devices. You can install DotVPN as an extension on conventional browsers like Chrome from version 22, Firefox, and Opera. You can find apps for it on Google Play Store if you run an Android version from 4.2, as well as on iOS if your iPhone is from version 8.0 or above.

Note that DotVPN does not have native apps for Windows and macOS yet. I didn’t like this because it meant I couldn’t use it on gaming apps and other software. DotVPN promised to set up its Windows and iOS ahead of mid-2016, but this promise looks far from being fulfilled.

Ease of Setup & Installation — One-Click Installation

DotVPN is pretty easy to download and install with a few simple clicks. Since there are no native apps on Windows and macOS for this VPN, you can only install browser extensions on your favorite browsers from the site. You can decide to sign up or buy a premium plan while navigating the extensions or you can do that on the site.

DotVPN sends a message after successfully signing up. The interface of the extensions is pretty basic. When I installed DotVPN on my Android device, I noticed how it strongly differed from the browser extensions.

You can see the differences between the DotVPN browser extensions and mobile apps

I didn’t have problems understanding how to navigate any of its platforms. DotVPN even has a feature that measures your connection speeds and ping time while using its servers. I found this feature pretty useful as it helped me in selecting the best servers in my location.

Steps to Installing DotVPN on Android:

  1. Download the DotVPN App. Attempts to search for this application on the Playstore were unsuccessful. So, you will need to access the app on the Playstore through DotVPN’s website.

  2. Launch and login. Launch the app after the download is complete. You can begin using the VPN by logging in using your subscription information.

  3. That’s all. You can now access the Internet safely and privately on your Android phone without having to worry about restrictions on content.

Support

- 3.0 / 10

DotVPN’s support is too limited. I was never able to receive a response early enough. You can only reach DotVPN by submitting a ticket on its website with your email address. There are no social platforms or telephone numbers to call, nor is there a 24/7 live chat.

I had to figure out any questions I had myself or stick to the FAQ or solution sections to get answers to some common inquiries. The response time took nearly 4 days each time. Considering that only one staff member responded to my and my colleague’s questions, I presume DotVPN is short of support staff.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.

Pricing

- 5.0 / 10

The pricing plans for a premium DotVPN account are fairly affordable for the features you get. You can also access certain servers — in the USA, Netherlands, and Paris — for free. Though it is important to note that using the free plan restricts your access to certain features like speed and encryption.

I paid for a premium plan using Paypal but you can also pay using Bitcoin (for longer plans), and local payment systems. DotVPN also offers a 45-day money-back guarantee for any of its plans. You have ample time to explore the service without any risks and evaluate its full range of features before making a decision to subscribe to a paid plan.

Final Verdict

DotVPN is an average VPN service with robust enough features to help you perform simple tasks. It is also an affordable service and delivers decently without reducing your normal internet speed by much.

Considering the response rate of customer support and the fact that this service last updated its site in 2017, I have doubts if it will be able to consistently deliver quality service to its users and attend to problems that arise. For those reasons, I would skip out on this VPN and instead look at ExpressVPN as it offers competitive features while staying up-to-date with security trends and user needs.

FAQs About DotVPN

Is DotVPN good?

Yes, for average uses. DotVPN is developed to route your internet connection with an extensive list of servers at decent speeds and acceptable security features. However, you can only stream on a couple of platforms and might have problems doing so comfortably.

Can I use DotVPN for free?

Yes! DotVPN offers a free version that makes servers in the US, Netherlands, and France available to users for as long as possible. Just keep in mind that the premium plan is required to access the ultra-fast speeds that DotVPN advertises.

Many free VPN providers include tracking mechanisms and collect personal information from their users. Additionally, websites employing more effective tracking mechanisms, such as browser fingerprinting, can track and collect your data regardless of whether you are connected to a VPN. If you are looking to use a reliable VPN that offers free plans, you should consider taking a look at some of these VPNs instead.

Is DotVPN really safe?

Yes, DotVPN’s security system demonstrated robust capabilities. Despite operating as a proxy service on your Windows and macOS, DotVPN uses some of the most elegant encryptions available. Particularly, it uses AES-128 bit encryption and the 4096-bit kit. It also has other security features like an ad blocker and tracking protection but no kill switch.
