BulletVPN Review 2024: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?

BulletVPN Overview

BulletVPN is a relatively small player in the world of VPNs, but a no-questions-asked guarantee on their product indicated a high level of faith in the quality of their product and had me curious as to just how good their service is. Can they compete with better-known companies, or do they still have a lot to learn? I put BulletVPN to the test to find out.

After thorough testing, I was genuinely impressed with the VPN. BulletVPN delivered on security, privacy, and user experience, and unlocked almost every streaming platform I tried. While the speed tests showed fairly low numbers, I never actually experienced any significant lagging – in fact, in most cases, web pages loaded in a split second, as though I wasn’t using a VPN at all.

Fortunately, a trial period of 7 days is available for BulletVPN, allowing you to experience its features firsthand. If you need more time to test it, they also have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee where you can get your money back without any questions. However, if BulletVPN doesn’t work for you, you may want to consider other leading VPN providers that have a better track record.

Don’t Have Time? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary

BulletVPN Unblocks Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer (but Can’t Access Hulu and HBO Max)

BulletVPN impressed me with its capabilities in unlocking the various streaming platforms. I had to test a few servers before finding one that worked for some streaming platforms, but the service was able to unlock most of the streaming platforms that I subscribe to.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more: Unblocked

After logging into BulletVPN, I went straight to my Netflix account to watch An Inconvenient Love and was able to watch the full hour-and-a-half program without any interruptions. However, I could only gain entry to the Netflix US library through the New York server. Other US servers were incompatible with the platform, and servers from other countries did not work either.

I was able to watch my favorite Netflix movies without any lag using BulletVPN

My Amazon Prime Video account also didn’t detect my use of BulletVPN at all, as it sometimes does with other VPNs and I was able to stream an entire movie without issue. No lag, no dropped connections, and no issues whatsoever – it was a smooth experience, as though I wasn’t using a VPN at all.

It was easy to access Amazon Prime Video and watch its top shows for hours

Disney+ didn’t unblock right away – I had to try a couple of different servers before it worked, but then I was able to stream a few episodes of Shook without issue. Only the Ultra-HD servers worked, but that was enough to do what I wanted. The VPN was also able to connect easily to BBC iPlayer with no speed issues.

I got HD streaming quality while watching Shook on Disney+

YouTube rarely has an issue with VPNs, but I checked anyway and had no issues streaming a few videos. Like YouTube, Vimeo doesn’t normally deny use due to a VPN, but I was able to enjoy some short videos – although I did hit a bit of a lagging issue on Vimeo, the first time I’d experienced less than seamless streaming all day.

Furthermore, BulletVPN successfully unblocked France2, and even enabled access to SBS Australia, without any notable latency issues, despite being connected to a server located far away. Additionally, BulletVPN can unblock ESPN+ effortlessly, ensuring that you never miss your favorite team’s matches.

Hulu and HBO Max: Blocked

I was let down to learn that BulletVPN can no longer access Hulu and HBO Max, even though it was able to do so during my previous tests. I conducted an extensive examination of BulletVPN’s US servers, including those optimized for streaming, and was able to establish connections with my Hulu and HBO Max services. However, despite entering the correct login credentials, the website persistently denied me access, citing incorrect password input.

If you rely on these platforms for your streaming needs, I recommend exploring other options such as CyberGhost, which provides optimized servers for Hulu and HBO Max streaming.

Speed

- 8.0 / 10

Only Good on Short Distance Servers

BulletVPN lived up to its name by providing satisfactory performance when I connected to servers in close proximity. However, there was a noticeable decline in speed when connecting to remote servers. BulletVPN has 150+ server locations, and if you happen to be situated close to one of these locations, you will experience fast enough speeds for high-quality streaming and general web browsing.

Speed Test Results

To establish a performance benchmark, I conducted an initial test of my internet speed without the VPN engaged. The results revealed a download speed of 107.02 Mbps, an upload speed of 14 Mbps, and a commendably low 3ms ping. To gauge the effectiveness of the BulletVPN service, I conducted speed tests while connected to four different servers.

Connecting to a local UK server yielded a download speed of 77.32 Mbps and an upload speed of 2.99 Mbps, which represents a reduction of 27% and 78% respectively, compared to my baseline measurements. When connected to a US server, I recorded a download speed of 21.62 Mbps, which was lower than expected, although I did not experience any lag-related issues while browsing, gaming, and streaming.

Screenshot of speed test results while using BulletVPN

I noticed a significant drop in speed when I connected to long-distance servers

During my assessment of BulletVPN, I tested its server in France and experienced a substantial decrease in download speed to 38.01 Mbps and upload speed to 1.05 Mbps, indicating a loss of 64% in download speed and 92% in upload speed. Additionally, when I connected to a server in Australia, which is located far away, I observed a record-low speed of 12.53 Mbps, which is not surprising as distance typically affects VPN performance.

It’s worth noting that BulletVPN’s performance was consistently poor when connecting to servers located outside the UK. In comparison to larger VPN providers like ExpressVPN, which has demonstrated reliable high-speed performance on long-distance servers, BulletVPN falls short.

Is BulletVPN Fast Enough for Gaming? Yes!/No!

When using servers located within close proximity, my online multiplayer gaming experience was devoid of any latency issues. However, I encountered intermittent challenges when connecting to servers located at a considerable distance.

Screenshot of my gaming session while using BulletVPN

I played PUBG without any lags using BulletVPN

For gaming, a download speed of 3 Mbps, an upload speed of 1 Mbps, and a ping rate of less than 150 ms is recommended internet connection benchmarks. BulletVPN’s short-distance servers met these criteria, thereby ensuring a gratifying PUBG gaming experience for me. The long-distance servers on the other hand despite having adequate download and upload speeds, experienced spikes in ping that exceeded 150 ms, resulting in lag. I recommend that you have a look at ExpressVPN because of its higher speeds and lower latency, both of which make it an excellent VPN option for gamers.

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

Servers

- 7.0 / 10

Server Network — Decent Server Coverage

BulletVPN offers over 150 server locations in more than 50 countries, adding two countries to their 2020 roster, and they expand further each year. BulletVPN has fewer servers compared to larger and more established VPN providers like CyberGhost, but they still have a respectable network of servers that are strategically located in key countries such as the US, UK, Spain, Italy, France, Japan, Brazil, Chile, and South Korea. Additionally, they cover less-served areas like Russia, Hong Kong, Nigeria, South Africa, and the Isle of Man, providing coverage across all continents except for Antarctica.

Hide My IP has a limited but wide-reaching server network

If you’re a fan of streaming, you’ll find BulletVPN particularly helpful since you won’t have to worry about missing out on the best streaming channels. BulletVPN has streaming-optimized servers located in 15 different regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, South Africa, Netherlands, and Germany, making it easy to access content from around the world. It should be noted that during my testing with various servers, I experienced difficulties establishing connections with certain ones.

Security — Excellent

BulletVPN may not have advanced features like some expensive VPNs, but it has made sure that you can use its service without revealing your identity. This is a great feature on its own and is accompanied by some other cool features listed below.

  • Solid encryption – BulletVPN keeps your data safe by using a powerful encryption method called 256-bit AES. This means that your online activity is protected with a level of security that is widely recognized as the industry standard. It makes your information unreadable to hackers or anyone trying to intercept your traffic.
  • Multi-protocols – when it comes to ways of connecting to the internet through BulletVPN, you have 4 options to choose from – PPTP, L2TP, IKEv2, OpenVPN, and WireGuard. WireGuard is the newest and most advanced option, with faster speeds and better security than the others.
  • Kill switch – the kill switch tool in BulletVPN helps protect your privacy by automatically stopping your internet connection if the VPN connection fails. This keeps your IP address hidden and prevents any sensitive data from being visible to others. BulletVPN has a feature called BulletShield that works with the kill switch. It helps keep your device safe by making sure it only connects to the internet when it’s connected to one of BulletVPN’s servers.
  • Split tunneling – this feature lets you choose which internet traffic goes through the VPN and which doesn’t. It allows you to divide or “split” your internet traffic between the VPN and your regular internet connection.

My actual IP address was protected when I connected to BulletVPN

BulletVPN may not have specific features to protect against IP and DNS leaks, but it uses encryption to keep your data private and a kill switch to disconnect your internet if anything goes wrong. To confirm that BulletVPN is secure, I tested it on various servers and didn’t find any signs of IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks.

Privacy — Zero-logs Policy

You don’t have to worry about your privacy with BulletVPN. The company is based in Estonia, avoiding many data retention laws, and its privacy policy very clearly states that under no circumstances will user data be shared.

Screenshot of Hide My IP’s Privacy Policy

BulletVPN does not collect some personal data such as your login information and IP address

That, paired with their strict no-logging policy (it logs connection time and amount of bandwidth, but none of your personal information or activities), means your data should be very safe and your privacy completely protected. The company promises to not log details, even your IP address or DNS connections.

Torrenting — Torrent-friendly

BulletVPN allows P2P sharing and supports torrenting apps, like BitTorrent, so torrenting is an option. The VPN has good security features that will protect your online activity when you download files using torrents. However, note that its speed can be very slow when connecting to long-distance servers.

My team and I don’t support downloading copyrighted material illegally through torrents. Please check the laws and guidelines in your country to make sure you’re not breaking any rules. Also, make sure the files you download using torrents are not protected by copyright laws.

Does BulletVPN Work in China? Maybe!

Based on my communication with BulletVPN support, it has been confirmed that their service is not compatible with China’s stringent firewall and VPN regulations. Nevertheless, BulletVPN’s Hong Kong server may provide restricted access to content in China, which can be beneficial if you intend to travel to the country and require access to certain materials.

Screenshot of my interaction with BulletVPN's support about its inactivity in China

I was able to confirm that BulletVPN cannot function within China

Although BulletVPN may not be a dependable option for users located in China, ExpressVPN has a strong track record of successfully circumventing the Great Firewall of China. ExpressVPN also remains committed to enhancing its obfuscation technology to overcome any improvements made to China’s firewall.

It’s worth noting that using non-government-approved VPNs is illegal in China, but tourists haven’t faced any public penalties from the Chinese government. However, it’s important to exercise caution when using a VPN in China and avoid committing illegal acts under the guise of VPN protection.

User Experience

Simultaneous Device Connections — Supports 6 Connections.

You can use BulletVPN on 6 different devices simultaneously, so you’ll have no issues watching your favorite show on your Roku, even as you get some work done on your laptop. I connected the VPN on three of my devices – cell phone, laptop, and tablet – simultaneously and experienced no lag or interrupted connections.

If you happen to own more than 6 devices and require an additional connection, CyberGhost provides an excellent solution with its offer of up to 7 simultaneous connections. Furthermore, this VPN service supports routers, enabling you to connect an unlimited number of devices using a single subscription.

Device Compatibility — Cross-Platform Support

BulletVPN offers a great advantage in that it can work seamlessly with various devices and operating systems, allowing for maximum flexibility and accessibility. On top of applications for Windows and Mac computers, it can be installed on Android devices, iOS devices, Linux, routers, streaming TV devices, and gaming consoles. The service’s website provides numerous setup guides that can assist you in manually configuring it.

Ease of Setup & Installation — Quite Straightforward

Installation of BulletVPN is very easy. I simply downloaded the app from the website, and it was easy to install with just one click. It took only a few minutes to finish installing, and then I could log in and start using the service.

BulletVPN’s desktop app looks quite similar to its website, making it easy for users to navigate. Once you log in, you’ll notice a world map with a big “Connect” button right in the center. By clicking on this button, the app automatically connects you to the best server available, showing you which server you’re connected to at the bottom of the screen.

The BulletVPN Windows application has an intuitive user interface

On the left side of the screen, there’s a gear-shaped settings button. When you click on it, you’ll see four easy-to-navigate options designed for average VPN users: Connection (for managing your connections), Tools (for helpful utilities), Support (for assistance when needed), and Diagnostics (for troubleshooting issues).

If you click on “Connection,” you’ll find settings to turn on or off features like the Kill Switch, BulletShield, and Split Tunneling. In this section, you can also change your device’s VPN protocol, which determines how your data is encrypted and transmitted through the VPN.

Steps to Installing BulletVPN on Windows:

  1. Visit the BulletVPN website and sign up for an account. You’ll need to provide your email address and select a payment plan. Once you’ve completed the payment, you’ll receive an email with login credentials.
  2. Download the BulletVPN Windows app. The website automatically recognizes your operating system as soon as you’re logged into your account and directly leads you to download the Windows file.

Support

- 8.0 / 10

While BulletVPN may not provide a live chat support option, its alternative support channels are highly efficient and useful. You can easily contact its customer support via email or by sending a support ticket. It is available around the clock to assist you with any problems you may have. Whenever I sent them requests or emails, they responded within six hours with clear instructions on how to resolve the issues I was facing.

If you’d rather find help on your own, you can check out the provider’s website and look for its FAQs section, troubleshooting section, and setup guides. These resources can provide you with useful information and step-by-step instructions to help you address any problems or questions you might have about the VPN.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.

Pricing

- 7.0 / 10

BulletVPN offers good value for money when considering its longer-term subscription plans. The paid version offers three payment plans – monthly, 6-monthly, and yearly, all of which provide the same features. While the monthly subscription is relatively expensive, comparable to top-tier VPN services with more extensive features, the annual subscription is quite reasonable, providing a generous 78% discount.

We provide multiple platforms for convenient payment. Choose your preferred plan and pay using Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover cards, PayPal, or Bitcoin.

You can, and you should test BulletVPN features for free before purchasing a subscription. The service gives everyone a 7-day free trial to try all the features. It’s a very good option that saves customers from frustration. BulletVPN does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, and it was easy enough to cancel the service from the desktop website after I had completed this review.

Final Verdict

BulletVPN is a product you should consider. While its server network is still small by comparison, it does the job, and the quality of the service balances out a slightly high price tag. Their security protocol keeps your devices safe, while their privacy policy keeps your data secure, and the VPN works anywhere in the world. Their no-questions-asked money-back guarantee even proves the company’s confidence in the product.

With a little more time to grow, BulletVPN may be on par with the leaders of the VPN industry. Nonetheless, if you are seeking a VPN that delivers superior capabilities beyond those currently provided by BulletVPN, then you may wish to consider ExpressVPN, which is renowned for its comprehensive effectiveness. Test ExpressVPN out for yourself risk-free. If you don’t feel it’s right for you, you can get a full refund within the 30-day money-back guarantee period.
