OpenAI Releases Desktop App Versions For Windows And Macs
OpenAI launched a new desktop app for Windows users and updated its desktop app for macOS users.
In a Rush? Here are the Quick Facts!
- OpenAI launched a new desktop app for Windows users
- MacOS users with paid ChatGPT subscriptions access the new update to interact with coding apps
- Certain features are restricted for ChatGPT Plus members
“The ChatGPT desktop app for Windows is now available for all users,” posted the company on the social media platform X last night. “Get faster access to ChatGPT with the Alt + Space shortcut, and use Advanced Voice Mode to chat with your computer and get hands-free answers while you work.”
Users can download both applications, ChatGPT for Windows and ChatGPT for MacOS, through OpenAI’s website, where they will also find more information about the main features.
According to PCMag, the Windows application was previously available only for ChatGPT Plus members. Now all ChatGPT users can use the AI chatbot platform, even if certain features like Advanced Mode for speaking interactions are restricted for paid subscriptions.
For MacOS users, OpenAI revealed that the desktop app is now able to access and interact with other applications.
“ChatGPT for macOS can now work with apps on your desktop. In this early beta for Plus and Team users, you can let ChatGPT look at coding apps to provide better answers,” shared the startup on X from its OpenAI Developers account. ChatGPT can now interact with Xcode, VS Code, iTerm2, and Terminal.
According to TechCrunch, OpenAI wants to expand ChatGPT’s interactions with more platforms but is now focusing on coding apps because AI coding assistants have been one of the most popular uses for Large Language Models.
The new feature for MacOS still has limitations—it can’t write code directly on the external apps the way other tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursos can—and is only available for paid users—Enterprise and Education users should get access in a few days.
To try the new features, users must download the most recent versions.
A few weeks ago, OpenAI introduced a new web search feature that lets users search the web like they would do on Google, getting real-time information.
