Google One VPN Review 2024: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?

Google One VPN Overview

Google One VPN was launched in 2020 by Google. It claims to focus on encrypting your online activity for added security, a simple claim for such a big company. I tested it to see if it meets industry standards and to check for any other notable features.

Despite its user-friendly interface and satisfactory speed, Google One VPN has limitations. It restricts server selection, automatically connecting you to the closest one. It offers robust 256-bit AES encryption and adheres to a no-logs policy. However, extra features like kill switch and split tunneling are exclusive to Android, limiting its functionality on other platforms.

Purchasing Google One cloud storage is mandatory to use Google One VPN. The absence of a free trial or refund option means you can’t evaluate it without incurring costs. If it’s not right for you, you might want to explore these highly recommended alternatives.

Don’t Have Time? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary

Google One VPN Worked With Every Platform We Tested

Google One VPN lets you stream from any platform you have access to. Since it automatically picks a server based on where you are, you can use it to watch Netflix’s US shows if you’re located there.

It impressed me with its ability to handle streaming on various platforms. Logging into Netflix and watching movies was easy, I simply connected to my local UK server and was able to stream from my Netflix library. I didn’t experience any buffering, and I was able to watch in high definition immediately.

The same goes for Amazon Prime Video. With Google One VPN, I could stream shows like “Criminal Minds” in crystal-clear HD without any interruptions.

Google One VPN connected to Amazon Prime Video easily and streamed my shows in HD

BBC iPlayer and Disney+ sometimes don’t play well with VPNs, but Google One VPN worked decently well. There were some minor streaming speed issues, but nothing that spoiled my enjoyment of the latest “Casualty” episodes.

I finished watching an entire movie on BBC iPlayer in full HD without buffering

The VPN worked even on the notably VPN-unfriendly Hulu and Max. Our testers across the US reported smooth streaming on these platforms, with top-notch video and audio quality.

If your goal is to use your local streaming services while staying safe online, Google One VPN is a viable option.

Important! While some VPNs could hypothetically be used to stream content that would otherwise be unavailable to you, doing so goes against the streaming platform’s terms of service and could constitute copyright infringement. We recommend that you always abide by applicable rules and regulations.

Speed

- 8.0 / 10

Consistently Good Download Speeds

I found that my internet speed barely changed with Google One VPN, which was surprising given its basic features. However, it lacks server options, automatically connecting to the nearest one. In my case, that meant a UK server. This auto-selection could be restrictive for those who prefer to pick their server location themselves.

While the following information may not give you a complete picture of what to expect based on your location and the type of internet connection you use, it provides an overview of what you can expect.

Speed Test Results

Google One VPN delivers impressive speeds, with hardly any noticeable speed drop. It’s great for everyday tasks like web browsing, watching HD and UHD videos, or downloading torrents. Plus, its low ping is a big plus for smooth online gaming.

Without the VPN, my 5G router in the UK averaged 80-100 Mbps download and 7-10 Mbps upload speeds. When I turned on Google One VPN, the download speed slightly dropped to 73-81 Mbps. Uploads dropped by about 7%, averaging between 6.7 and 8.4 Mbps. I did these tests 3 times a day for 3 days, spacing them out to ensure accuracy.

Google One VPN delivered impressive speeds on its local servers

While Google One VPN works well, I’d suggest you use ExpressVPN as it gives you more options. It offers a much wider selection of servers and consistently fast connections, both locally and internationally as well as a solid set of features. This makes it a strong alternative, especially for those needing reliable speed and flexibility in server options.

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

Servers

- 5.0 / 10

Server Network — Limited Coverage

Google One’s VPN is quite secretive about its server network. Unlike most VPNs that share details about server numbers and locations, Google One doesn’t. This secrecy leaves you guessing about how extensive and efficient their network is. It’s different, sure, but leaves us in the dark about what the VPN can really do.

Available in several countries, Google One VPN spans Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK, and the US. Its reach is decent, covering most key locations worldwide.

Notably, this VPN lacks the option to pick your server or country. It automatically links you to the closest server based on where you are. There’s no way to change this or even see where servers are located. You just hit “Enable,” and it connects you to the nearest option.

Traveling with Google One VPN is a bit of a question mark. Its website says it should work worldwide, but doesn’t give details. Will it find the nearest server in a supported country, or just not work at all? It’s unclear, and that can be a problem if you rely on a VPN when you’re on the go.

If you’re interested in a VPN with a better global network, CyberGhost offers one of the most reliable VPN services for streaming or any other online activities. It has more than 11,670 servers in 100 countries worldwide, ensuring there is always a fast server available, regardless of the purpose.

Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at WizCase, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as CyberGhost VPN. However, this does not affect our review process, as we adhere to a strict testing methodology.

Security — Missing Key VPN Features

Google One VPN provides solid security with AES-256 encryption, the same type used by governments for top-secret data. This keeps your information safe on Google Cloud. However, it’s not clear how it protects data while it’s being sent due to unclear VPN protocols. It also uses 2048-bit RSA keys, beefing up its defense against advanced security threats.

The VPN, while secure, doesn’t boast a wide array of unique features. Its few offerings are primarily available on Android, limiting its utility across other devices. Key features include:

  • Kill switch – prevents accidental exposure by ensuring that your data remains secure even if the VPN connection drops
  • Split-tunneling – maintains speed and access to local services by allowing selective routing of app traffic through the VPN

I ran a test with IPleak.net, a site I trust for checking DNS leaks, and Google One VPN passed with flying colors. It only showed IP addresses from its own servers, meaning it hides your real IP address well. This is great for keeping your online identity secret.

Screenshot of a successful IP/DNS leak test with Google One VPN
My IP and DNS data were protected with Google One VPN

A downside of Google One VPN is it doesn’t have extra security features like ad or malware blockers. This means you might still run into unwanted ads or even viruses, which isn’t ideal if you want full protection.

Privacy — Audited No-Logging Policy

Google One VPN prioritizes your privacy, promising not to monitor, log, or sell your data. Its commitment is evident as it has made the VPN client’s code open-source, boosting transparency and trust. This move shows its understanding of the importance of trust in the VPN world, offering users more confidence in their service.

Independently verified by NCC Group, a renowned security firm, Google One VPN’s security is publicly proven. Its audit, open for anyone to review, digs deep into the VPN’s workings, spotting 24 security issues. Google has actively addressed these, notably updating its Windows client for safer use without needing administrative privileges.

Google One VPN does store some basic operational data, like access frequency, bandwidth rate, tunnel uptime, and aggregate data. However, it doesn’t track what really matters: your specific online activities, IP addresses, location, or personal data. This means while it keeps tabs on general usage, your individual actions stay completely off the record.

Despite its privacy-first approach, Google One VPN’s US base raises eyebrows. The US is part of the Five Eyes alliance, so theoretically, the government could ask for user data. And with Google managing all VPN servers, there’s a slim chance it could track users under government pressure.

A missing piece in Google One VPN’s privacy approach is the absence of a warrant canary. Such a feature would alert users to secret data requests, enhancing trust. Without it, users lack a key reassurance about data security, making other VPNs in privacy-friendly regions more appealing.

Torrenting — Adequate for Casual Torrenting

Google One VPN is fine for basic torrenting, but it falls short for heavy-duty use. While it’s speedy and works with P2P apps like qBittorrent, it’s missing important features like port forwarding and SOCKS5 proxy. This means it’s not the best option for those who are really serious about their torrenting.

The service doesn’t talk about torrenting on its website, which makes you wonder if it’s safe for that purpose. Also, you can’t choose specific servers or countries, and there are no special servers just for P2P. This lack of focus on torrenting might be an issue if you’re really into it.

If torrenting is important to you, you might want to try a different VPN. A better solution would be to consider using alternatives like CyberGhost that possess a superior level of privacy protocols. For example, CyberGhost operates within a jurisdiction that condones torrenting, thus affording a safer environment for downloading, which minimizes the risk of malware threats.

Remember, it’s crucial to understand the legality of torrenting in your area. Always ensure the content you’re downloading is free from copyright issues to avoid legal complications. Our team emphasizes this to help you stay informed and safe.

Does Google One VPN Work in China? No!

Google One VPN wouldn’t work in China because it lacks the necessary stealth features. I haven’t personally tested it there, but notably, China isn’t on its supported list. Additionally, the company’s vague responses and website details don’t clarify its effectiveness in unsupported regions, despite claims of international usability.

If you’re looking for a quality VPN that will work there, subscribe to ExpressVPN when you’re in China. It is one of only a few VPNs that consistently work in China, concealing your identity and location with 256-bit encryption and zero-log policies.

Just remember – while a VPN may help you protect your privacy, that doesn’t make it okay for you to engage in illegal activities. You should always exercise caution when browsing the internet through a VPN in China.

User Experience

- 5.0 / 10

Simultaneous Device Connections — 6 Device Connections

Google One VPN supports 6 devices simultaneously, suitable for family groups, but not for supervised children’s accounts. Testing on 2 Android phones, 2 Windows laptops, and a Mac showed only a 2-3Mbps speed drop. This minor decrease didn’t affect streaming quality or speed on any device, ensuring seamless Netflix viewing across all connected devices.

Device Compatibility — Works With All Major Devices

Google One VPN is compatible with all major operating systems. This includes support for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android platforms. However, it is important to note that there is no dedicated app available for router integration. This means it cannot be used to directly protect home or office network traffic.

Additionally, this provider does not offer a specialized app for Android TV or other smart TV systems. This limitation is significant for those looking to secure their streaming devices directly. The focus remains on individual device protection rather than network-level or specialized smart device applications.

Ease of Setup & Installation — Easy to Set Up and Use

The Google One VPN app is designed for ease on both Windows and Mac. Its interface is clear and straightforward, making it effortless to activate the VPN. You don’t need to be tech-savvy to use it. The app mainly features 2 controls: an on/off switch and an auto-launch option on startup.

On Android and iOS, the Google One VPN app includes additional functionalities, aligning with our frequent use of mobile devices for internet access. It enables storage monitoring, data syncing, and device cleanup. These tools help you manage your phone more efficiently.

Screenshot of Google One's user interface on Android

Google One VPN offers limited options for personal tweaks

The Android version of Google One VPN stands out with special features. It includes split tunneling, allowing you to select which apps use the VPN. There’s also a kill switch that disconnects your internet if the VPN fails, and a handy snooze option to pause the VPN for 5 minutes. These features give Android users more control and flexibility.

Besides VPN services, the app allows for easy management of your Google One subscription. You can handle backups or clean up your Google account. Its design is simple, following Google’s usual minimalist style. Everything is clearly labeled, making it super easy for anyone, even if you’re new to VPNs.

One limitation of Google One VPN is its lack of server selection options. You can’t choose specific servers, as Google automatically handles server assignments. If you prefer more control over server choices, like selecting a particular country, you might consider an alternative VPN solution.

Steps to Installing Google One VPN on Windows:

  1. Open Browser. Launch your preferred web browser and visit one.google.com.
  2. Navigate to Benefits. On the Google One site, click ‘Benefits’, then find and click ‘View details’ under ‘VPN protection for multiple devices’.

Support

- 8.0 / 10

I found Google One’s customer support quite impressive. You can get help through phone calls, emails, live chats, and a detailed knowledge base. The phone support is a big plus, as it’s not something you often see with VPN services. These options are available in every country where Google One VPN operates, ensuring global users can easily get help.

My experience with Google’s support varied. Email responses felt generic and less informed, lacking the expertise I expected. In contrast, live chat was significantly more effective. Reachable 24/7 for Google One members, the chat support is easy to initiate. Just visit “Support,” select “Chat,” choose your product and issue, and briefly describe your problem for prompt assistance.

Screenshot of my email conversation with Google One VPN support

Google One VPN support’s email reply was unclear and irrelevant

The chat support impressed me with its speed and efficiency. Connecting with an agent took less than a minute, and they were exceptionally helpful. I faced an issue with activating my Google One VPN, and the agent dedicated around 30 minutes to explore various solutions. The problem was traced back to my account registration in a non-supported location.

Email support, however, was less satisfactory. Despite a quick response time, the quality of support fell short. The representatives seemed unable to address basic queries, providing generic and irrelevant replies. This disparity in the quality of support between channels was notable and somewhat disappointing.

The knowledge base, on the other hand, was a high point. It offers clear, detailed articles and a user-friendly search function. The instructions are easy to follow, but I noticed a lack of visual aids, which could enhance understanding of complex topics. Despite this, the available resources ensure that users can readily find the help and information they need.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.

Pricing

- 7.0 / 10

Google One VPN is unique in its pricing structure. To get the VPN, you must subscribe to a Google One cloud storage plan, starting with the basic package. Unfortunately, the VPN isn’t available as a standalone product, which might be inconvenient for some users who only want the VPN service.

Each subscription plan includes access to Google experts, the option to share your plan with up to 5 users, and other perks. Premium subscribers enjoy additional benefits like 10% back on Google Store purchases and access to Google Workspace premium features, adding more value to the higher-tier plans.

Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro users receive a special perk: free access to Google One VPN through the Google One app, no subscription required. However, this offer doesn’t apply to Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro users in Singapore and India. Additionally, Google has embedded its VPN service directly into the Pixel 8 series.

Regarding payment methods, Google One VPN accepts credit/debit cards and PayPal. It’s worth noting that they do not accept cryptocurrency, and there are no anonymous payment options. Also, Google One doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee or a free trial, which is something potential subscribers should consider.

Google One VPN offers the following plans

Final Verdict

Google One VPN is a decent choice if you’re already using Google One cloud storage, but it’s quite basic. Its key strengths are fast speeds, ease of use, and support for local streaming. However, it’s not very flexible as you can’t pick your server; it automatically connects to the nearest one.

The VPN provides strong encryption, but its protocol isn’t disclosed. Android users benefit from a kill switch and split tunneling, but it lacks advanced features like stealth servers and built-in ad or malware blockers. These limitations are more apparent on non-Android devices, reducing its overall versatility.

Despite being independently audited and addressing past security concerns, Google One VPN’s location in the US, under the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliance, raises some privacy issues. Its simplicity might appeal to casual users, but it may not satisfy those in need of a more comprehensive VPN solution with robust features.

In comparison, ExpressVPN offers superior anonymity, effectiveness in China, and enhanced performance for downloading, streaming, and gaming. It comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try ExpressVPN out for yourself completely risk-free. If you’re not satisfied, you can always get a full refund.

FAQs About Google One VPN

Is Google One VPN good?

No, I would not recommend Google One VPN. Although it’s fast and easy to use, adhering to a strict no-log policy, its security and privacy features are only average. It doesn’t offer the ability to choose specific countries or servers, and it misses some basic features commonly found in other VPNs.

Can I use Google One VPN for free?

No! To access Google One VPN, it’s necessary to subscribe to a paid Google One cloud storage plan, as it’s not available for separate purchase. However, Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 users get the benefit of using Google One VPN at no additional cost.

Though I’m typically hesitant to recommend free VPNs, if you’re specifically looking for one, you might want to explore some of the top options. These free VPNs offer robust security, maintain decent speeds, and are user-friendly.

Is Google One VPN really safe?

Yes, Google One VPN is generally safe with its 256-bit AES encryption and no-logs policy. However, its security features are limited, including a kill switch only for Android and unclear VPN protocols. Its US base, under the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances, and Google’s history of privacy concerns, add to the reservations about its safety.
