SkyVPN Review 2024: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?
SkyVPN Overview
SkyVPN’s promises of robust security, thousands of servers, and lightning-fast connections at such an affordable price seemed almost too good to be true. I was curious to see whether it could actually deliver on its claims, so I tested it thoroughly myself.
SkyVPN offers industry-standard encryption, a great streaming experience, and useful security features like a kill switch that protects your data if you ever lose connection to the VPN’s network. On the downside, it stores a lot of identifiable data including IP address, device IDs, and location information.
Fortunately, SkyVPN provides a free plan and a 1-week free trial of its premium package, allowing you to test it out. Additionally, you can make use of its 30-day refund policy for an extended evaluation period. If SkyVPN doesn’t meet your needs, I suggest exploring these premium VPNs for a top-notch experience.

SkyVPN Unblocks Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max (But Can’t Access DAZN and BBC iPlayer)
SkyVPN is remarkably good at streaming. This is thanks to its specialized servers that are effective at unblocking streaming services. After testing its streaming capabilities, I was impressed at how it could access Netflix, Hulu, and other platforms with ease.
Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max: Unblocked
Testing SkyVPN’s streaming capabilities. SkyVPN’s streaming-focused server named “Netflix-US” successfully unblocked US Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO Max. Plus, all these platforms streamed smoothly in HD without any buffering.
Streaming Netflix with SkyVPN is an absolute breeze. The website loads without any slowdowns and everything streams smoothly in HD.
HBO Max works great on SkyVPN. Browsing through its catalog with SkyVPN feels fast and responsive, and everything streams in HD without any buffering.
Using Hulu with SkyVPN is a great overall experience. The library can take a while to load properly, but, once it’s loaded, you can stream your favorite shows in HD without any buffering.
DAZN and BBC iPlayer: Blocked
SkyVPN could not access DAZN or BBC iPlayer, even with its streaming servers. BBC iPlayer didn’t work, even when it was tested with SkyVPN’s “Netflix-UK” server. DAZN also recognized that the connection was coming from a VPN, and both these platforms gave a message similar to the following:
This service isn’t available in your country.
CyberGhost is a much better choice for streaming enthusiasts as it provides special streaming servers while also offering a much wider selection of locations. You can easily use it to access most streaming platforms and watch your favorite shows in HD.
Speed
- 7.0 / 10SkyVPN Manages to Maintain Fast Connection Speeds
I was pleasantly surprised to see that SkyVPN delivers fast connection speeds, even on long-distance servers. I tested a variety of locations, including those that are both incredibly far from and close to where I live. The speeds were great in each case and allowed for smooth browsing, as well as streaming in HD without buffering.
Speed Test Results
The connection I tested SkyVPN on has stable base speeds of 15Mbps on both download and upload. In almost every case, the speeds dropped around 20% after I connected to one of SkyVPN’s servers.
I tested servers across a variety of regions when checking SkyVPN’s speeds. I tested the US server that’s quite far from Pakistan, which is where I live. I also tested India, which is quite close. Plus, I tested France, UK, and some other countries’ servers as well. Every SkyVPN server I tested, including the ones specialized for streaming, maintained fast speeds.
The biggest drop I saw was around 37%, which is understandable considering it was on the US server that’s quite far from my location. The browsing experience remained smooth and free from slowdowns in this case as well, though.
Is SkyVPN Fast Enough for Gaming? No!
SkyVPN’s streaming-focused servers are definitely impressive, but I can’t say the same for its gaming servers. The SkyVPN website claims that this VPN is great for gaming, but, in my experience, it simply wasn’t. I tried playing PUBG mobile using its specialized PUBG server, but I experienced far too much packet loss to even play properly.
I also tried playing Call of Duty: Mobile with SkyVPN, but had a similar experience. I experienced too much packet loss that caused an annoying rubber banding effect, and the high ping made shots extremely difficult to hit. So, in spite of the website’s claims, SkyVPN isn’t a good choice for gamers.
Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds
Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.
Servers
- 5.0 / 10Server Network — Somewhat Small but Still Reliable
SkyVPN’s server network is rather small. There are only 23 different locations to choose from, excluding the 5 specialized streaming and gaming servers it has to offer. This makes for a fairly small server network, but at least every server works.
One thing that’s odd about SkyVPN is that its website says it has 3,000+ servers. This doesn’t seem quite right considering there are only 28 available locations in the VPN’s apps. There aren’t any concrete details about this anywhere. It is possible that there are hundreds of servers in any given one of the locations listed above, but the lack of specific server details leaves me to doubt this.
The following table consists of the different SkyVPN locations you can connect to:
Continent | Countries |
North America | United States |
South America | Brazil |
Europe | United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, Romania, Latvia, Poland, Denmark, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Bulgaria |
Asia | Turkey, Hong Kong, Israel, Singapore, Japan, India, Korea |
Oceania | Australia |
Connecting to SkyVPN’s servers is easy no matter what platform you’re using it on. Simply hit the connect button and you’ll be automatically connected to any well-performing server. Also, it’s just as easy to browse through the server menu and manually pick a server you want to connect to.
SkyVPN’s apps also come with a status bar next to each server that’ll show you how reliable your connection will be. One strange thing I’ve noticed, though, is that every single server always shows optimal status, no matter what time I check. This gives me some doubt regarding how accurate this indicator actually is.
If you’re seeking an unmatched variety of server choices tailored to your unique requirements, CyberGhost stands out as the premier option, featuring an impressive array of over 11,670+ servers, thoughtfully dispersed throughout 100+ nations. With CyberGhost, you’ll unlock a world of possibilities, ensuring seamless connectivity and peak performance.

Security — Too Vague to Be Trustworthy
SkyVPN claims to use industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption, but I still wouldn’t trust this VPN in terms of security. One key reason for this is the fact that it never mentions what protocols it uses to establish connections. I even contacted SkyVPN customer support to get further information, but they wouldn’t even respond to my question.
One thing that I can say for sure, though, is that SkyVPN doesn’t use the OpenVPN protocol. This is mentioned on a blog on its website. It says that it doesn’t use this because it’s a widely recognized protocol so it can easily be broken by hackers. This confused me, as OpenVPN is an air-tight standard used by many premium VPNs.
Other security features offered by SkyVPN include:
- Kill switch – SkyVPN also comes with a built-in kill switch and IP leak prevention. These features can be toggled on and off from within its apps, but I recommend keeping them on at all times to keep yourself secure. Please be aware that this functionality is limited to the Windows edition of the software.
- Split tunneling – split tunneling is a networking concept that allows you to direct some of your network traffic through a VPN connection while the rest of the traffic flows directly to the Internet. Similar to the kill switch, this feature is exclusively available on the Windows application.
A DNS leak may occur if the VPN app malfunctions or if you connect to a network with incorrect settings, allowing DNS requests to escape the encrypted tunnel and return through the ISP’s servers, compromising your privacy. To prevent such breaches, perform tests immediately after implementing the VPN. In this assessment, I conducted IP and DNS leak tests on various SkyVPN servers.
The picture above shows no sign of a leak. I connected to a UK server using SkyVPN, and everything seems fine. However, I still needed to verify for WebRTC leaks. The examination indicates no possible leaks since the VPN provided the displayed IP address, indicating that everything is secure. No personal information is being exposed.
Overall, I think there are many better options than SkyVPN in terms of security. I would personally recommend you use ExpressVPN if security is a key factor for you. It offers unbreakable encryption and a whole suite of security features to keep you safe and secure online.
Privacy — Stores Too Much Data
SkyVPN simply does not seem reliable in terms of privacy. It claims to have a no-logs policy but stores way too much user data to be trustworthy in this regard. For what it’s worth, though, SkyVPN’s headquarters are based in Hong Kong, so it’s outside the 5, 9, and 14 Eyes Alliance’s jurisdiction.
I took a good look at SkyVPN’s privacy policy and analyzed the data it’s keeping. SkyVPN collects data like aggregate bandwidth usage, temporary usage data, real-time analysis of internet and data traffic, including originating IP and destination IP, cookies, tracking pixels, and related technologies for targeted ads, email address and contact details, information on support requests. Using it on mobile devices feels even riskier as it can collect device make and model, mobile web browser type and version, IP address, Mac address, operating system, location data, Mobile Country Code information, list of applications installed on your device, and “other technical data” from your device.
I simply can’t trust SkyVPN when it comes to privacy due to all the data it keeps. Most trustworthy high-end VPNs don’t store nearly as much identifying information. So, you should definitely avoid this one if privacy is an important factor.
If privacy is of utmost importance to you, ExpressVPN presents itself as an outstanding choice. It refrains from retaining data such as IP addresses, DNS requests, traffic destinations, metadata, locations, browsing histories, and other related details. Consequently, there is no possibility of associating you with an IP address or timestamp. This claim is validated by an independent audit.

Torrenting — Supported but Restricted in Some Regions
SkyVPN’s terms of use state that torrenting and P2P activities aren’t allowed on US, UK, CA, and FR servers. I did, however, use other servers to check if it’s a good VPN for torrenting. I was able to download torrents with ease and actually got decent download speeds.
I downloaded a movie available on the public domain to test how good SkyVPN is at torrenting. The speeds weren’t as fast as some other top-tier VPNs, but they were acceptable and showed that some of SkyVPNs servers fully support P2P. I wouldn’t recommend downloading torrents with SkyVPN, though, considering how much identifying information it keeps.
I want to highlight here that my team and I do not condone downloading copyrighted files. You should always check your country’s regulations on torrents before downloading them.
Does SkyVPN Work in China? Unlikely
While I can’t test SkyVPN in China to get a definitive answer myself, it’s unlikely that it can be used to bypass censorship. I contacted SkyVPN customer support to confirm this and they said that it can’t be used in China due to local policy. I also want to mention that it took a full 3 days for customer support to respond to this straightforward question.
Thankfully, there are better VPNs such as ExpressVPN that are tested and proven to work in China without issues. It is, however, illegal to use VPNs that aren’t approved by the Chinese government. There aren’t any cases of tourists being penalized for using VPNs during their stay, though, because authorities usually attempt to block them technologically instead.

User Experience
- 6.0 / 10Simultaneous Device Connections — Supports 5 Devices at Once
SkyVPN allows up to 5 simultaneous connections on 1 subscription. I used this functionality to connect multiple phones as well as my Windows PC to the VPN simultaneously. While 5 simultaneous connections may be enough for some, users with a whole suite of devices may find this number a bit lacking. With many VPNs offering upwards of 10 or even unlimited connections, I would have liked to see SkyVPN offer a bit more.
I had no trouble simultaneously connecting multiple devices to SkyVPN. Each of them connected within seconds, and I didn’t experience random disconnects or slowdowns while using the VPN on multiple devices at once.
Device Compatibility — Has Apps for 4 Different Platforms
SkyVPN has native apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. This isn’t too bad, but there are certainly other VPNs with much broader device compatibility. Many high-end VPNs today can be used on absolutely everything ranging from smart TVs to gaming consoles, so SkyVPN definitely falls behind in this aspect.
One thing I would’ve liked to see is a way to install SkyVPN on my router. This would’ve let me use SkyVPN easily on multiple devices across my network.
Ease of Setup & Installation — Easy Installation Process
Installing and running SkyVPN is a simple process. After signing up for the service quickly, I was sent to a user-friendly website dashboard. There, I found links to download SkyVPN’s apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
First, I tried the Windows app. When I logged in, it showed me all the servers I could connect to. But, SkyVPN only lets you pick a location while it chooses an IP address for you. Connecting was easy. I chose a server, clicked connect, and after a few seconds, the app made a sound to let me know it was connected. When disconnected, it made a shattering glass sound.
One thing I didn’t like was the lack of extra features in the Settings section. However, SkyVPN does have a split tunneling feature, which is a good addition, but not available on all its applications. I also found a kill switch, which is important because it stops your internet access if the VPN connection drops. This makes sure no important data is sent over an unprotected connection through your internet provider’s servers.
Steps to Installing SkyVPN on Windows
- Visit the SkyVPN website. Open the SkyVPN website and click the download button at the top.
- Download the Windows app. Click on the “Download” button and this will download the SkyVPN setup file to your computer.
- Run the setup to install the VPN on your PC. Once the download is complete, double-click on the setup file to begin the installation process. Follow the prompts to install SkyVPN on your computer. You may need to accept the license agreement and select the installation directory.
- Launch the SkyVPN app and choose a server of your preference. After the installation is complete, launch SkyVPN by double-clicking on the desktop icon. Proceed to choose your preferred server from the list of options provided.
- Establish connection. Click on the “Connect” button to establish a connection to the selected server. Once the connection is established, you can start using SkyVPN on your Windows computer.
Support
- 2.0 / 10SkyVPN’s customer support is one of its weakest aspects. One major issue I have with it is that it actually doesn’t offer live chat of any kind, even though it’s mentioned several times on the SkyVPN website that it does.
There’s also the fact that email support is rarely able to help. I reached out to them multiple times for help with several issues, and not once did I receive a truly helpful response. Also, they simply refused to answer my questions regarding the VPN’s protocols.
The answers I did receive from support were incredibly generic and barely of any help. Plus, it took around 24 hours at the very least for me to even get a response from SkyVPN support.
Finally, SkyVPN has FAQ and Help sections on its website, but these are also very generic. There isn’t any useful troubleshooting information in these sections, so you may just have to figure out the solutions to some issues on your own if you run into them.
How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care
We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
Pricing
- 8.0 / 10SkyVPN’s pricing is one of the main things going in its favor. It comes with a monthly plan, a yearly plan, and a 3-year plan, which offers the best value. Furthermore, it provides a free version that lets you use it without any cost, but there’s a downside – the servers are slow and it shows ads. The impact on user experience and efficiency is significant. If you register through the Apple Store or Android Play Store, you can give the premium version of the app a try at no cost for a 7-day period.
Regarding payment options, SkyVPN accepts a range of methods like PayPal, credit card, TOP, AliPay, UnionPay, and even cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency payments are usually more private than using credit cards, which helps keep your personal information hidden.
SkyVPN comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee as well. This will let you fully test the VPN before making a commitment. If you feel the VPN’s services aren’t satisfactory, you can easily request a refund via email during this time period. It’s important to note the money-back guarantee is waived if the original purchase is changed in any way. If you wish to request it, make sure that you remain on the plan you subscribed to at the beginning so that there aren’t any issues down the line.
SkyVPN offers the following plans
Final Verdict
SkyVPN just isn’t a VPN that I would recommend, in spite of its strengths. It’s great at unblocking different streaming platforms and delivering consistently fast speeds across its servers. Unfortunately, it’s incredibly vague in terms of its security and protocols, and it also keeps an unnecessary amount of data on each of its users.
SkyVPN comes with crucial features like a kill switch, split tunneling, and support for up to 5 simultaneous connections. However, the generic and unresponsive customer support is easily among the worst I’ve come across. Its website is also misleading because it claims to offer live chat, even though this isn’t true.
ExpressVPN is a much better choice in every possible way. It has incredibly helpful and responsive customer support, lots of lightning-fast servers to choose from, industry-standard security, and native apps for a wider variety of platforms. Also, it’s far more trustworthy thanks to its crystal clear no-logs policy.

FAQs About SkyVPN
Is SkyVPN good?
Is SkyVPN really safe?
Can I use SkyVPN for free?
Yes, there’s a free plan for SkyVPN. I wouldn’t recommend using it, though. It’s littered with ads, offers limited servers, and has painfully slow speeds. It lets users watch ads to earn premium data which is interesting, but this doesn’t really make it worthwhile. The provider also gives you a 7-day free trial of the premium version when you sign up through the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
If you’re looking for a free VPN, I suggest picking from these top free VPNs. They have their drawbacks, like all free VPNs do, but are much better alternatives than SkyVPN free.
